A Passion for Sustainability produced by Landfall Productions in 2008 focuses on sustainable business leaders from architects, engineers, furniture makers, the wood industry, clothing industry who follow the four steps of the Natural Steps program founded originally in Sweden. The featured participants wed community activism with savvy ecology while keeping their eyes on the bigger picture we all face on the planet.
While I love all the concepts and ideals that these folks have put into action, I can't help but wonder why more American cities haven't taken up the challenge which is to create green industries and employment that give back to the planet, instead of the usual exploitation. The challenge brings out innovation, creativity and resourcefulness so why aren't more American cities jumping on board this sustainable train? Okay, to be fair a few of them are including Chicago and San Francisco as well as, Seattle to an extent. The midsize city Bellingham has achieved some impressive results with some of its greener city planning, though I think it needs improvements in public transportation, sustainable low-income housing, and moving away from a big box store economy.
